I’ve been testing a few new hair products recently as I’m trying to invest more time and energy into looking after my hair. My hair has never been a great asset thanks to my genes (and quite probably because for about 20 years of my life I tied it back in a tight ponytail to keep it out of my way as a gymnast!). Thanks to making friends with someone who is an excellent hairdresser I’ve started getting my hair cut more regularly which has definitely helped strengthen my hair, and the way my hair looks (and feels) definitely affects my self-confidence so I’m keen to make the most of what I have.
My hair is very dry; I have tended to prefer shampoos and conditioners designed for Afro hair (I do have black heritage so am wondering if that might be one reason for it being so dry). It’s also very fine and can get frizzy; its natural tendency is wavy/kinky and I tend to stay pretty close to this when I style it. It doesn’t tend to get greasy, though with some of the more natural products I’ve tried I have noticed I seem to need to wash my hair more frequently as it can feel more greasy. I usually wash my hair every 2-3 days depending on gym/swimming visits (sometimes it’s more often if I’m at the gym or pool every day). My hair is professionally coloured so products that are colour safe are an essential – I have quite a lot of grey hair which I really don’t love, and I really like the colour my hairdresser does for me so want to keep it looking good as long as I can.
I’d heard a lot of people talk about the Giovanni 50:50 range positively for helping moisturise without being too heavy which sounded perfect for my hair. I decided to try both the shampoo and conditioner and have recently used them up so it’s time to share my review.
Giovanni 50:50 Balanced Hydrating-Clarifying Shampoo* (£7.99 for 250ml)
The shampoo promises to add moisture and manageability whilst leaving it “perfectly pH balanced and clean”. It definitely delivers on the clarifying aspect as I really feel this does a great job at removing any residue. My hair feels really clean after using this which helps when I style as it makes creating volume easier because it’s not weighed down.
I do however find that it leaves my hair ‘squeaky’ clean which I’m not a huge fan of as it doesn’t feel moisturised in this state and feels quite fragile. I definitely think I need to make sure I use a deep moisturising conditioner when I’m using this and I’m not sure how hydrating it is as a shampoo.
Giovanni 50:50 Balanced Hydrating-Calming Conditioner* (£7.99 for 250ml)
The conditioner again promises to add moisture and manageability and hydrated thanks to botanical extracts which it says will smooth frizz. It’s not too heavy or thick a product and is easy to massage into your hair. I tend to leave my conditioner on to help it penetrate, so I apply this, comb it with a wide toothed comb, and leave it for a few minutes before rinsing.
I find it is really effective at detangling and helping hair feel soft when wet (without feeling fragile). As you rinse it stays smooth and detangled so I find I don’t need to do too much to brush it through with my Tangle Teezer (which is always a good thing as I don’t like to brush it too much when wet). My hair doesn’t feel like it has a lot of product in with this, but it definitely does the trick in helping it stay moisturised and smooth.
Combined, these two products work wonders on my hair and are some of the best cruelty free and natural hair products I’ve tried. They work really effectively and smell great. The promise of moisturised hair with shine is realised and it feels soft and light without being frizzy or flyaway. I find this is a great combination to use whether I’m styling my hair or just leaving it to do its natural thing (I do usually also use a hair oil as well to help keep the ends moisturised, but only need to use a tiny amount with this shampoo and conditioner). They’re excellent value too – highly recommend!
Giovanni 50:50 Balanced Hydrating-Clarifying Shampoo* and Giovanni 50:50 Balanced Hydrating-Calming Conditioner* are available from LoveLula*. Both products are £7.99 for 250ml.
