I found last year’s resolutions useful in helping keep me on the right track last year, and am pleased to say I kept most of them – here’s a review:
Complete my MSc dissertation– finished in JulyAttend more conferences– I attended lots of great conferences and events in 2011- Implement the Getting Things Done system at home and work – I seem to have this sorted for electronic information, though need to work on physical organisation of paperwork and notes
Participate in Library Day in the Life– I took part in both rounds of Library Day in the Life in 2011Continue to blog– I posted 44 times on this blog in 2011, and also blogged for Evidence Base and for projects I’m involved in
As it was a useful exercise for helping me focus last year, so I’ve decided to set myself more resolutions/goals for this year. In common with Erin, these are general aims so cover all areas of my life.
- To work on CILIP Chartership (reflecting on achievements and updating wiki on at least a monthly basis)
- To improve physical organisation, particularly in home office – notes and paperwork etc.
- To achieve a more productive balance between different parts of my life ensuring I make time for professional, personal, and social activities
- To continue to blog about professional issues and ideas as well as reflection on activities
- To publish at least one paper (preferably peer-reviewed)
Bring it on!
Hi Jo,
Happy New Year! I’ve also made it a resolution to publish a paper and have signed up to the CILIP course to help get me started.
See you there!
Sarah
Thanks Sarah, Happy New Year to you too.
Great to have a shared resolution – hopefully we can help encourage each other with that! See you on the course 🙂
I think you should get super-extra bonus points on “attend more conferences” for attending one on the other side of the pond, too :).
What are you using for GTD? I love the idea of it but keeping up with the details is not a strength of mine.
Good luck with 2012!
Thanks Andromeda – I like super-extra bonus points! 🙂
I use Nirvana for my to-do list which helps me keep at inbox zero – I’ve blogged about it before, it’s one of my favourite tools: http://joeyanne.co.uk/2011/05/31/striving-for-gtd-nirvana-with-nirvanahq/
I use a combination of Outlook calendar (work appointments) and Google Calendars (home life, conferences and extra ‘stuff’) and access these mainly via iPad or iPhone – all calendars are on both devices.
Notes I’m not so good at though as I don’t fully trust Evernote due to hearing some horror stories of lost data. I’d like to use Evernote to combine electronic and physical notes (by taking photos on iPhone to add physical notes/papers), but need to get into the routine of using it properly and backing it up regularly.

Happy New Year, Jo! I am crossing fingers for peer-reviewed publication myself this year, and the GTD is always necessary.
I use Evernote myself at work for scribing on the iPad at meetings. I have had no data loss, but it is synced to more than one computer and device *crosses fingers*.
Thanks Kristi – hopefully your positive Evernote experience will convince me to trust it more!
Thank you very much – good luck with your blogging 🙂
[…] Anyway a week into 2012 I appear to have some resolutions. I thought if I write them down I might do them (partly inspired by Jo Alcock). […]
