Book review – The Descent of Man by Grayson Perry

There are so many books that I’d like to read and I haven’t been prioritising reading as much as I’d like to recently. In order to address that, I’ve switched some of my social media and TV time for reading and am really enjoying it so far. I also like to share what I’ve learnt from books that I’ve read and would like to do more of that via the blog and my Youtube channel.

The first book I read in 2018 was Grayson Perry’s The Descent of Man* which I received as a Christmas gift (it was on my wishlist). As you might imagine, it’s a book about masculinity. Within it Grayson shares his own experiences as a man in today’s society, and as a male travestite.

It’s a fairly easy read; it’s less than 150 pages (some of which are cartoons!) and isn’t heavy-going. I don’t like anything too theoretical though I confess I do wish there was a little bit more research in the book (some is mentioned but not much). Having said that, there are plenty of other books that do have this focus and Grayson’s is more about sharing experience and his thoughts on what could be done in future to support a more equal society for all. It’s great to read about this from a male perspective.

I enjoyed the book and found it to be a thought-provoking read.
