To be or not to be

Yesterday was World Bee Day, a day designed your raise awareness of the importance of bees and beekeeping.

It got me thinking about a different version of bee though – human beings (it’s a tenuous link I know, but I’m going with it!).

I’m hearing people talk about how they’re concerned they haven’t “done” much during lockdown, and how they feel an element of guilt that they haven’t achieved much recently.

So much of our focus in society seems to be on what we’ve done. When we meet people we often ask, “What do you do?”. We ask people, “How are you doing?”. So I’m giving us all a reminder today…

We’re human beings, not human doings.

We’re all incredibly valuable and unique because of who we are, not because of what we do.

Some weeks recently when I’ve done my end of week reflection I’ve realised I haven’t managed to do anywhere near all the things I’d have liked to have done in the week. But that’s OK. The right things will happen when the time is right, and in the meantime I’m choosing to just be.

It’s a very freeing feeling to just be. Be at peace. Be calm. Be however feels right in the moment.

How are you being today?

Sometimes I use a ‘to be’ list rather than a ‘to do’ list – that way it helps me focus on how I’d choose to be in all the activities I choose to do and reduces the pressure on performing. I’d much rather be remembered for the way I am rather than what I do.

What would go on your to be list?

How would it feel if you focused on how you want to be rather than what you need to do?

Be yourself ????
